The Mexican War - 1846 to 1848

The United States declared war on Mexico on May 13, 1846 only six months after Texas had been admitted to the Union. Hostilities began with a Mexican attack on American troops along the southern border of Texas on Apr. 25, 1846. U.S. Gen. Winfield Scott occupied Mexico City on Sept. 14, 1847 and a peace treaty was signed on Feb. 2, 1848 at Guadalupe Hidalgo. In addition to recognizing the U.S. annexation of Texas, Mexico ceded California and New Mexico (including all the present-day states of the Southwest) to the United States.

Volunteer soldiers served with the Regular Military. Militia service was limited to no more than six months of continuous service and volunteers could be mustered for twelve months or until the end of the war.

Some of the volunteers who served in the Mexican War had also served in the earlier Indian wars or would later serve in the Civil War. Some of the Texas volunteers were retained in service after the war to protect the frontier areas of Texas from Indian attack.

Compiled Service Records

The Compiled service records consist of a card or cards containing information abstracted from original records such as muster rolls, returns, and medical and prison registers. The records will show rank, military organization, and the term of service. They may list age, place of enlistment, place of birth and may provide a physical description. These records are valuable for proving military service.

Pension Records

Pension files often contain a wealth of genealogical information and may include the original pension application, affidavits from friends, family, and other members of his regiment, along with medical and service records, and copies of marriage and death certificates. All pensions granted to veterans of the Mexican War and their surviving dependents before 1871 were based exclusively on service-connected death or disability.
