Confederate Soldier Research at the National Archives
Confederate Soldier Research
More than 1,400,000 brave men marched off to war under the Stars and Bars, more than 258,000 made the ultimate sacrifice. It is an honor to to assist you in locating your ancestor's Confederate records.
We are able to search a number of Confederate records held by the National Archives, but keep in mind that these records are often fragmentary due to incomplete muster and descriptive rolls. For some companies such rolls were not even prepared; for many, only a part of the required information was provided and for hundreds of others, records have been lost or destroyed. Moreover, some soldiers served in State militia units that were not mustered into Confederate service. These Confederate records can often be located at the appropriate state archives.

Confederate Compiled Service Records
The Compiled service records consist of a card or cards containing information abstracted from such original records as muster rolls, regimental returns, and medical and prison registers. The records usually show a soldier?s presence or absence on certain dates, his rank and military organization, and the term of his service. Civil War service records may provide information about a soldier?s imprisonment. If he was captured, his record may show the date of his release and parole or the details of his death if he died in prison. They sometimes list the age, place of enlistment, place of birth and may even provide a physical description. These records are valuable for proving military service.
A compiled military service record is only as complete as the records of an individual soldier or his unit.
Confederate compiled service records have been microfilmed and are occasionally of poor quality. We will provide you with the best possible copies. Documents that are dark and illegible will not be copied. Sometimes the image, while illegible when copied may be legible while viewed. In those instances, we will, at your request, transcribe the documents for an additional fee.
Note: Confederate pension files are NOT available at the National Archives. They must be requested from the appropriate repository.
