Union Compiled Service Records

There are compiled service records for nearly all soldiers who were accepted for service in the Union army as militiamen or volunteers, 1861-1865, whether or not they actually served.

Compiled service records consist of a card or cards containing information abstracted from such original records as muster rolls, regimental returns, and medical and prison registers. The records usually show a soldier?s presence or absence on certain dates, his rank and military organization, and the term of his service.

Civil War service records may provide information about a soldier?s imprisonment. If he was captured, his record may show the date of his release and parole or the details of his death if he died in prison. Sometimes they list the soldier's age, place of enlistment, place of birth and may even provide a physical description. These records are valuable for proving military service.

Union Pension Files

Pension files often contain a wealth of genealogical information and may include the original pension application, affidavits from friends, family, and other members of his regiment, along with medical and service records, and copies of marriage and death certificates. A pension search requires the name of the soldier and the unit he served with. His birth date, birthplace and name of spouse may also be helpful if known.
